High Standard made some modifications to Diehm’s Model 1925 and named it the “Hi-Standard Model B”. Thirteen years later, in 1945, High Standard introduced the H-D Military. Produced until 1950, the H-D Military was a fairly large pistol (5” tall) that uses a ten round magazine and sports either a 4.5” or a 6.75” barrel. Hi Standard Model B. I just purchased a Hi Standard Model B, 4.5' pistol. It is in 88-90% condition and has serial number 245XX under the trigger guard. The holster has '1209DB S' and '4 1/2' on the back of the belt flap. I was wondering if anyone might know when this was manufactured. For the curious, I paid $325.00.

Title: High Standard Model H-B Type 2 Target Pistol, Blue 6.75” SA Semi-Automatic Pistol, MFD 1948 C&R .22 Long Rifle
Make: High Standard
Model: Model H-B, Type 2 (Post War)
Serial Number: 295802
Year of Manufacture: 1948 (http://www.histandard.info/datapublic/serial/pserialno.html)
Caliber: .22 Long Rifle
Action Type: Single Action Semi-Automatic with Removable Magazine.
Markings: The left side of the slide is marked “HI-Standard / Model HB”. The left side of the frame is marked “Made In U.S.A. / The High Standard Mfg. Co. / New Haven, Conn. / Patent Pending / .22 Cal. / Long Rifle”. The right side of the slide and the front of the grip are marked “295802”.
Barrel Length: 6 ¾”
Sights / Optics: This pistol is mounted with a flat topped square notched rear sight dovetailed into the slide and a post style blade fixed to the top of the barrel.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are checkered black plastic with an “HS” logo in a circle in the center of both grips. There are 2 mounting screws on each grip and each have a brass escutcheon. The checkering shows light wear with a spot of moderate wear below the logo in the right grip and a few tiny mars. The grips rate in about Fine condition.
Type of Finish: The barrel and sides of the slide and frame are blued. The top of the slide and the underside of the frame have a black matte finish. The top of the frame should also have a matte black finish, but all of the finish has been removed.
Finish Originality: All Original
Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore.
Overall Condition: This pistol retains about 40% of its metal finish. There are a few tiny spots of pinprick surface erosion at the left rear of the slide around the serrations. There is surface loss at the front and underside of the barrel, on the edges of the slide and frame, and on the front strap and backstrap. There is surface loss with light wirewheel marks on the top of the frame in front of the slide. The remaining surfaces show a few light handling marks and thinning, with a ding and several tiny scratches in the left side of the barrel. The serrations on the safety show light wear, the slide serrations are sharp and the hammer knurling shows moderate wear. The safety screw and grip screws are disfigured. The markings are clear. Overall, this pistol rates in about Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly, except the slide does not return all the way into battery when the slide release on the right side of the frame is depressed. The hammer sear is slightly worn, which raises the hammer slightly when it is cocked, allowing it to rub on the bottom of the slide, and the return spring in the slide is very weak. We did not fire this pistol. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This pistol comes with one magazine. It is blued with the top 3/8” “In The White”. The magazine shows surface loss on its front face and spine, and on the front edge of the floorplate. The magazine is in about Very Good condition.
Our Assessment: When Hi Standard first started producing semi-auto rimfire pistols, the first model they came out with was the model B. The basic design was derived from an earlier Browning design, as was the Colt Woodsman. In fact, the Woodsman and the Model B look almost identical, although they are not. The Model H-B added an external hammer, and the H-B Type 2 (post-war) added an external safety. There are about 25,000 H-B Type 2 pistols made with either 4 ½” or 6 ¾” barrel lengths. Although they were originally marketed as plinkers, the Models B and HB turned out to be reliable, well made, and accurate pistols. This pistol is in Good condition with a weak slide return spring, and a bright, sharp bore. There weren’t that many of the H-B models made, making them all somewhat rare. This will make a nice addition to your High Standard collection or collection of vintage rimfire pistols. If you decide to shoot it, you should consider replacing the recoil spring and if necessary modifying the sear so that the slide closes properly. When this pistol is up and running, you might find it outperforms a lot of the semi-auto rimfires being made today.

If it has a button on the back of the slide, push that button in and at the same time move the rear lever on the LEFT side downward and hold it while pulling the slide off to the rear. To reassemble, put the slide back on while holding the side lever down, then push the rear button and hold it while releasing the side lever. The lever should snap up parallel with the slide and there should be spring tension on the slide - not, push the rear button again. If the lever still does not snap up or there is no spring tension on the slide, come back, you have done something wrong.
If there is a round button on top of the slide, to disassemble, pull the slide all the way to the rear and push the top button down and hold it down while you push the slide forward all the way. There should be no spring tension on the slide. Then turn the lever on the right side down and hold it while pulling the slide off to the rear. Whatever you do, DO NOT force the lever down without disengaging the recoil spring. If you do, you have a gunsmith job coming up or you may have ruined the gun. To reassemble, put the slide back on and push it forward while holding the right side lever down. Release the lever and it should come back up. Then pull the slide all the way to the rear. The button on top of the slide should pop up and spring tension is restored to the slide.
