If you aren't always in your office, the Citrix Receiver app for the iPad gives you access to the same files and programs you use at your desktop without having to download them to your iPad. The app is free, but it requires a Citrix server and the corresponding server software before you can use it, which is usually done by a trained network administrator.

Understanding Citrix

The Citrix Receiver app works like any other Citrix client on a computer. The app connects to the Citrix server in your office by creating a secure, encrypted tunnel through the Internet. The server connects you to the files and programs in your office and presents it to you as a virtual desktop. When you open the app and sign in, the iPad's screen will look similar to the Windows desktop in your office. None of the files or programs are actually on the iPad; they are on the servers.

Using Citrix Receiver

The files and programs you can access from Citrix Receiver on your iPad are determined by which permissions you have been given by the Citrix administrator and which software was installed on the Citrix server. For example, you could work on Microsoft Word documents or Excel spreadsheets, send emails from your Microsoft Exchange server, and even print documents in your office even when you are in another city. The app also gives you the ability to attend virtual meetings with co-workers and access multimedia presentations stored at the office. The app uses iPad controls like tapping and pinching to zoom in, but it also includes a virtual mouse for those times when you need to right-click.

How To Download Citrix Receiver For Ipad

iPad Requirements

The Citrix Receiver app is available free from the App Store on an iPad, but you won't be able to use the app without a Citrix account. The app requires iOS 5.1 or later on an iPad 2, iPad with Retina display and the iPad mini. The same app also works on the iPhone 4, 4S and 5 and the iPod Touch 3rd generation and later. Citrix Receiver version 5.8 for iOS requires 19.1 MB of space on your iPad.

Citrix Server Requirements

Citrix Receiver on an iPad requires Citrix software to be installed on a dedicated server. Citrix recommends installing Citrix StoreFront on the server; however the app can also use Citrix App Controller and Citrix Web Interface. The server should also have XenDesktop, XenApp, VDI-in-a-Box or Presentation Server to run remote programs. To access Citrix outside of the office the server also needs Citrix NetScaler Gateway or Citrix Access Gateway. Before you can use the app, you need your Citrix administrator to issue a security certificate and grant you access to the files and programs you plan to use.
